On September 17, 2025, Meta and Ray-Ban unveiled the second generation of their smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. The new model retains the look of standard Ray-Ban glasses but features a higher-capacity battery, 3K video recording, and new artificial intelligence capabilities. Unlike AR glasses, the Gen 2 model does not display images in the user's field of view; instead, the user interacts with the AI primarily via voice and hears responses through built-in speakers.
How Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 Work
A camera, microphones, and open-ear speakers are built into the frames. The glasses work in conjunction with a smartphone and the Meta AI app. Users can say the command "Hey Meta" to ask a question, take a photo, or start recording a video.
The key feature is that the camera points in the same direction as the wearer's gaze. This allows the glasses to serve as a sort of "first-person view" device: you can photograph events, record walks, ask the AI about surrounding objects, and use translation functions.
However, the lenses do not feature a display. Maps, messages, and AI responses do not appear before your eyes; instead, information is conveyed via audio. That is precisely why it is more accurate to call the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 AI glasses equipped with a camera and audio system, rather than full-fledged augmented reality glasses.
What's new in the second generation
One of the key upgrades is a camera capable of recording in 3K Ultra HD . It supports ultra-wide HDR and frame rates of up to 60 fps. Meta also announced new shooting features, including hyperlapse and slow-motion video.
Another key feature is speech translation. Meta is expanding Live Translation, enabling the glasses to facilitate conversations across different languages. Language support and specific AI features depend on the country and software.
Up to 8 hours of operation
According to Meta, fully charged Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 glasses can last up to 8 hours with typical use. This is nearly double the rated battery life of the first generation. The glasses can charge to 50% in 20 minutes, and the charging case provides up to 48 hours of additional charge.
What models are there?
Gen 2 models are available in several basic frame shapes:
Wayfarer is a classic Ray-Ban design;
Headliner — a more rounded shape;
Skyler is a modern feminine form.
Various colors are available, along with standard, polarized, and Transitions lenses, as well as prescription options. The European Ray-Ban website currently also features the Scriber Optics and Blayzer Optics versions.
The price depends on the frame and lenses. For example, on the French Ray-Ban website, the standard Wayfarer Gen 2 configuration starts at €419, while some versions with different lenses cost around €449–499.
Where they are used
The glasses are designed primarily for everyday use. They can be useful for travelers wanting to take photos and videos without a smartphone, for people who frequently make calls or listen to music, and for those who wish to use AI voice features .
An interesting use case is travel: a user can ask the AI to describe an object in front of them, take a photo of a landmark, or use translation features without taking out their phone.
Are they sold in Europe?
Yes. Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 are officially sold in European markets. Ray-Ban's list includes, among others, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, the UK, and other countries.
However, the availability of specific Meta AI and translation features may vary by country.
