OpenAI has unveiled GPT-6 Astra, the next generation of its artificial intelligence models. The presentation took place on September 3, 2026. According to the company, the new model features significant improvements in computer interaction, information retrieval, programming, scientific tasks, and complex multi-step workflows.

AI is moving closer to autonomous operation.

One of the key changes in GPT-6 Astra relates not only to the quality of responses but also to the ability to independently perform actions on a computer.

OpenAI demonstrates scenarios in which the model can interact with websites, fill out forms, search for information, analyze documents and data, create websites, verify their functionality, and execute a sequence of actions to achieve a specific goal.

For the average user, this means a gradual shift from the familiar "ask and receive an answer" format to a more practical approach: assigning a task and having the AI execute several necessary steps.

Handles complex tasks better

GPT-6 Astra has seen improvements in programming, scientific research, mathematics, and professional tasks. The model is also capable of creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations while striving to adhere to user-specified templates and requirements.

OpenAI specifically highlights Astra’s ability to maintain the task's original goal even when new requirements arise. If the user changes the conditions, the model can adjust its subsequent actions without losing the overall context of the work.

GPT-6 Pro is a more powerful version of Astra.

OpenAI is gradually rolling out GPT-6 Pro—powered by GPT-6 Astra—to ChatGPT users. It is now becoming available on the Pro $100, Pro $200, Business, and Enterprise plans. Access to GPT-6 Astra is also being gradually expanded for Plus users, including within ChatGPT Work and Codex.
At the same time, the availability of the new model depends on the pricing plan and changes gradually as the rollout progresses.

What this changes for ordinary people

The primary significance of GPT-6 Astra lies not merely in the fact that the artificial intelligence has become better at answering questions. AI is increasingly evolving into a tool that can be entrusted with an entire sequence of actions.

For example, in the future, a user will be able to assign a task—such as finding specific information, comparing several options, preparing a document, and formatting it as required—without needing to explain each step individually.

However, this does not mean completely dispensing with human oversight. OpenAI reports that safety and control systems for Astra have been strengthened, particularly given the model's growing capabilities.

A new stage in AI development

GPT-6 Astra illustrates the direction in which artificial intelligence is currently evolving: from generating text and answering questions to performing actual work.

For users, this could prove to be a more significant change than yet another improvement in the quality of a standard chatbot. If such systems continue to become faster and more reliable, AI will be able to take on an increasing number of everyday tasks—ranging from information retrieval and document preparation to interacting with websites, software applications, and various digital services.

OpenAI began the phased rollout of access to GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026. A broader deployment is ongoing.
